Chris Innis

The Green Alliance in the UK has published a report calling for smarter homes to reduce energy and emissions.  The 32 page report with recommendations was prepared by Faye Scott.  Sustainable housing in a country where 75% of homes standing in 2050 are already built and where the domestic housing sector is responsible for 27% of all emissions is a key sector for the Government.  The policy of reduce, recycle, reuse has already been widely adpoted in local government which is responsible for alot of planning and building applications.

This report goes further calling for new smarter technologies to be introduced and supported by Government arguing that technology can make the home more efficient while allowing occupants to live in a similar lifestyle.  The report highlights the role of the internet in the home, using the experience of South Korea as an example, the need for better metering and policy support to favour houses that are energy efficient, (including a rating system that might affect home values) and changes in behaviour so that peak energy periods are mitigated.  It also concludes that educating the supply chain will accelerate the progress to greener homes.
