British schools will be included in the emission permit quotas of local authorities when the UK's new carbon emissions trading scheme is introduced in 2010. The inclusion of schools is designed to encourage children to think in terms of energy efficiency and sayving according to Hilary Benn, the Environment Minister.
British schools are already at the forefront of low carbon expenditure with the Government already commiting to spend £110 million over the next three years introducing into schools energy efficent technologies.
2010 marks the beginning of a concerted drive to a low carbon economy as the permit system, known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment will also be introduced at that time . This programme looks to reward any organisation or business that betters its allocated permit amount by allowing the sale of unused permits.
